Power BI Delivers Sky-High Analytics to Air Medical Organization

I’m looking at these dashboards every day, uncovering new trends, and critical insights for our Air Medical crew.”

The Vice President of Strategy of an Air Medical Transpiration company shared these words of appreciation after leveraging a Power BI Air Medical Analytics solution created by the team of consultants at Fulton Analytics. Real-time analytics and data-driven insight continue to shape many industries. Air Medical Transpiration and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) are just the latest to embrace the analytical capabilities of Microsoft Power BI.

This Midwest based Air Medical Transportation and Emergency Services company was seeking to enhance their reporting capabilities and build an analytics dashboard to uncover real-time flight operations insights. The team of consultants at Fulton Analytics led a complimentary data strategy session (link) to map a path forward and design an analytics solution.

Critical Insights

With bases across the Midwest, multiple aircraft and ground services, and servicing hundreds of requests a month throughout Wisconsin, Minnesota, and North Dakota – the organization was seeking a way to uncover trends and critical insights in an interactive analytics dashboard. The organization was seeking a solution that could answer questions such as:

  • How to shorten response/mobilization times

  • Total run volumes sorted by call type, flight base, crew and aircraft

  • Forecasting analytics for peak-times and busy seasons

  • Daily EMS Operations trends and insights

Flight Vector Software

This Air Medical Transportation company was leveraging an industry leading CAD system called Flight Vector, for their communications centers. Our team of consultants mapped the data tables and structures to Microsoft SQL Server. With the existing knowledge of SQL Server and the investment in Microsoft Office 365, our consultants validated that Microsoft Power BI was the perfect solution to meet this organization’s reporting and analytics needs.

Custom Built Solution

Our team partnered closely with the Operational and Clinical Teams to build a custom analytics solution. Our consultants were able to craft every inch of the report to meet the UI/UX design needs of our client. Following a continuous iteration approach, we were able to work side-by-side to create changes to reporting prototypes in real time. This was accomplished by weekly check-ins and team build sessions. This agile approach also allowed us to quickly shift reporting needs as the client’s priorities shifted.

The solution was built on top of Microsoft Power BI, recognized by Gartner as the industry leading business analytics platform.

Data Automation

One key challenge was data automation. The organization was struggling to maintain large, manual, excel reports. Siloed reporting and different methods of gathering or aggregating information across the company was resulting in a manual and labor intensive process to wrangle all the data on a monthly basis. Leveraging the existing systems and infrastructure, our team was able to automate data movement and schedule a regular refresh of the data. This alone saved hours of manual effort for our client.

The End Result

Patient care is the number one priority in the emergency services industry. Leveraging the solution created by the team at Fulton Analytics, this Air Medical organization will now be able to focus their efforts on analyzing real-time data to improve EMS operations and enhance the overall patient experience.

Executive Leadership, Clinical Managers, Administrative Staff, and Base Managers are now able to uncover critical insights in an interactive analytics dashboard allowing them to better serve the patient. At the end of the day, that’s what matters most.
